What's Your Fertility Story, Heather?

"You have less than a 5% chance of getting pregnant."

I remember exactly where I was sitting. I remember what I was wearing. I remember the specific weight of that sentence — not the words, but what lived underneath them. The quiet that followed. The drive home with my husband where neither of us said much.

I was 42. And I had been trying to understand what was happening in my body for years.

The years before anyone gave me real answers

In my mid-thirties, my cycles started changing. Horribly heavy periods. Migraines. Clotting so severe I would call in sick from work and spend the day on the bathroom floor, doubled over in the dark. This was not normal — and somewhere in my body I knew that — but the medical system kept calling it manageable.

At 37, I finally pushed hard enough to get a real answer: fibroids. Multiple ones. I had a myomectomy and recovered in about three weeks. My cycles got lighter. And then, slowly, the irregularity crept back.

My gynecologist put me on birth control to stabilize things. I wasn't thinking about pregnancy yet — I wasn't ready. But at a routine visit around the 11th month, she asked about children. Almost offhandedly, I asked: if I stopped taking this, how soon before I'd need to think about contraception again?

"Don't worry," she said. "With your AMH levels, you have less than a 5% chance of conceiving."

She meant it to be reassuring. I walked out of that office with no plan, no next steps, no idea what AMH even was — just a number that was supposed to close a door I hadn't known I was standing in front of.

Four losses and what they taught me

I stopped the pill in January. By February I was pregnant — and I didn't know it until I miscarried at 10 weeks.

I went back to my endocrinologist to understand what had happened. In August I was pregnant again. I miscarried in October, right before my wedding.

After that we got serious. Genetic testing, sperm analysis, hormone panels. More blood work than I had ever had in my life. The conclusion the doctors kept returning to my eggs were aging. After 35, egg quality declines significantly. After 40, it falls off a cliff. I was 42, and my body — for all the right evolutionary reasons — was producing fewer viable eggs with every passing cycle.

We tried IUI. I got pregnant. At the 10-week mark, we went in for the ultrasound and saw no movement.

Four losses. One clear pattern. One thing left to try.

The IVF cycle that changed everything

Before we moved to IVF, I stopped adding things to my protocol and started removing them. I cleared endocrine disruptors — plastics, synthetic fragrances, hormone-disrupting chemicals — out of my home and my daily routine. I changed how I ate: blood sugar stability, anti-inflammatory foods, the specific nutrients that directly support egg maturation. I started acupuncture, which did more than I expected — it improved my sleep, steadied my cycles, and slowly regulated a nervous system that had been running on cortisol for years.

We retrieved 5 eggs. Three made it to blastocyst. One came back chromosomally perfect.

One. But one was what we needed.

On February 15, 2019, we transferred that egg. Ten days later, I was pregnant.

Our daughter was born on October 19, 2019. I was 44 years old. And I had the healthiest pregnancy of my life.

In the room that day, our doctor said something I have not forgotten: "I don't know if you are faithful people, but this was nothing short of a miracle. I know science. But then there is God. Congratulations."

I believe both can be true.

Why I do this work

I spent years inside a system that told me what was not possible. What my numbers meant. What I should realistically expect.

What that system did not do was help me understand what was actually happening in my body — and what I could actually change.

That is what I do now. Not instead of your medical care — alongside it. I help women who have been told everything looks "normal" start asking the questions nobody asked them: about egg quality, about nervous system regulation, about the environmental and nutritional factors that standard testing never investigates.

Your body is talking. Even when the chart says everything is fine.

If you are still looking for answers, I built The Egg Awakening for you.
